BWH Newsletter » Autumn 2007
Welcome to Beaming With Health Autumn 2007 newsletter.
Many of us find Autumn a time of intense activity, energised after Summer, we feel more creative and focused than any other time of year. As always, it’s important to find time to take care of the inner you… slowing down to nurture and replenish so you don’t become depleted… and ill!
“Body is Slow Mind”
I believe emotional and other stress may cause physical symptoms such as headaches, eczema, irritable bowel, insomnia, even cancer, and that when the issue is looked at, and resolved in some way, the physical symptoms will disappear. However, in my practice I have noticed that very often symptoms linger, and occasionally emerge even after the stressful situation has been resolved. I was commenting on this to a patient, and she told me of the Buddhist phrase, “Body is Slow Mind”. For me this perfectly describes how, although we may have mentally and emotionally ‘moved on’ from a problem, our body still needs time to mend.

Lentil Salad
Some people are scared of legumes. Not because they are particularly ferocious (never met a bean I didn’t like) but because many of us are unfamiliar with how to cook them, believing they are time consuming and bland. Not so… legumes (such as chickpeas, kidney beans, lentils and baked beans) are a fabulous addition to our diet, they are high in protein and fibre and low in fat. Perfect. View the recipe

Dietary Guidelines
Last year the NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) released new nutritional guidelines, the first major update in 26 years. “The Nutrient Reference Values outline the levels of intake of essential nutrients considered to be adequate to meet the known nutritional needs of practically all healthy people for prevention of deficiency states. The document can be used by health professionals to assess the likelihood of inadequate intake in individuals or groups of people.”
There are many significant changes since the last Guidelines were published in 1991.
- They have included more nutrients considered vital to good health including omega 3 fatty acids.
- Really interesting is the implementation of SDI’s (Suggested Dietary Targets) where for the first time there is recognition that some nutrients can help PREVENT disease such as some cancers, heart disease and diabetes. This is a different figure than the minimum requirements considered necessary, known as RDI’s (recommended dietary intakes). For example vitamin C suggested Dietary Target is around 200mg, whereas the RDI is 45mg
- Many nutrients RDI’s have increased including calcium and iron.
